The incident took place on January 20. The following day, Diwakar’s mother, Lakshmi, 51, filed a missing persons complaint with Puttenahalli police when he disappeared after saying he had work in Sunkadakatte. His phone was turned off a few hours later and they haven’t heard from him.
Police say the two defendants and a woman who wanted money for expenses came across an advertisement from the company offering door-to-door delivery of gold loans and hatched a plan. The defendant called the company a day before the incident when Diwakar, who spoke to them, agreed to come with the money after taking details. The defendants had told him that they wanted to pawn a gold chain weighing 75 grams and wanted a loan on it.
“The accused overpowered him to take the money but when he resisted they strangled him with a wire. They used plastic blankets to wrap the body and threw him and his bicycle into the lake. Honnapura in Magadi by tying it down with a stone,” an officer said.
Police who were checking the call history of the deceased called everyone to investigate and the accused did not show up or respond to the police. Suspecting him, the police arrested him for questioning and he confessed. Based on his statement, the second defendant was also arrested and police are still looking for the woman who was also involved.
