Steve Evans compared his latest addition to England international Kalvin Phillips.
Gillingham boss Evans worked with Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United and sees similarities to midfielder Daniel Phillips, the 20-year-old Watford player who joined the club on a one-season loan.
Evans told the Gills: “I wouldn’t expect a lot of our fans to know much about the youngster, but they will definitely know about Leeds United and England’s Kalvin Phillips, and if they want a comparison from me, so here it is.
“Considering he’s a lot more inexperienced, and although younger than Kalvin, what a great benchmark for him to aim for.
“A number of high-end clubs in the Ligue 1 expense table were in talks with Watford, but I was delighted to get a call from the new technical director to say that our offer to loan this man to the Gills was the preferred. option. “
Phillips becomes Evans’ eighth summer addition and comes on the same day defenseman Rhys Bennett was announced.
The Watford newcomer plays international football for Trinidad and Tobago and has been with the Hornets since playing for their Under-14s, coming from Chelsea.
He made his first-team debut for the club in September 2020 and finished last season with five appearances to his name. He made his international debut in March.
Young Watford goalkeeper Adam Parkes has joined Dover Athletic.
